natures head self contained dry composting toilet separates urine from solids
Written by Bruce Broderick
Composting Toilets is a bit of a departure from what we here a Being Water have been supporting up until now. Our main products lines have been items like dual flush kits for existing toilets and water savers like the popular Smart Faucet. Dual Flush Conversions do save a lot of water. But... The concept of a self contained composting toilet that uses no water and eliminates that portion of the waste stream is to big of an idea for us to ignore. We like to think of it as the next phase in our own evolution as good caretakers of our environment. In fact, we were so taken by it that we have become the California distributors of this product line. The following is from the manufacturer:
"The Nature's Head Composting Toilet is the latest design, the best value, and the most reliable choice for portable, self contained, urine separating dry toilets -- on the water, on the land, or on the road."
"This toilet or head, (the marine term for toilet) was designed by two long time sailors who sought to create a more user friendly version than anything else on the market. While we designed our product to withstand the harsh marine environment, it can be used anywhere you need a toilet, especially anywhere that plumbing or electricity is difficult or non-existent -- on RVs or campers, in vacation cabins, workshops, barns, yurts, even trucks. Most importantly, this toilet doesn't have the foul odors associated with all other holding tank systems.
The low volume air circulation fan built into the head provides the added benefit of recycling the air in your bathroom which helps make your whole environment smell better. Because it was originally designed for marine use, its rugged design and materials (all stainless hardware) it has been proven to be extremely durable no matter what your environment."
Are We Ready For This?
As good of an idea as these composting toilets appear to be, I was a bit concerned about whether or not we would be able to successfully offer them. After all, we have to change our entire view about how we go to the toilet. There is no more flushing away to somewhere else using many thousands of gallons of fresh water every year. If you live in the country like we do then creating a new compost area for the red wigglers (worms) to work on is not a big deal. But for a city dweller it could be a bit of a challenge. But doable.
Yes We Are!
I started mentioning to some of my neighbors and friends at the local Grange that we were going to offer an affordable U.S. made composting toilet and the response was much more positive than I had expected. Several were ordered right away and other acquaintances are considering purchasing one.
